Several years ago, District 5110 was having great difficulty finding individuals who were willing to take on the challenge of being District Governor or to serve in other District leadership positions. Sometimes we had only one or two candidates each year seek the office and even though all did a fine job serving as club president, we knew that we had many qualified Rotarians in District 5110 who were not showing any interest in the DG's position or any other District level office. We knew we had to do something to change this. Then DGE David Horn came up with the idea based on a discussion with PDG Jim Andrews from District 6780 in Tennessee, a "Leadership Academy" program. David obtained their curriculum and got as much information as he could about their program and began to put together a plan to implement a similar program in District 5110 during his year as District Governor (1998-99).
District Leadership Academy Nominations for 2008-2009
It is time once again to submit nominations for the 2008-2009 District Leadership Academy (Class of 2009). The DLA prepares past club presidents for leadership at the District Level (DG, DGE, DGN, DGND, AG’s, District Committee Chairs, District Committee members, etc.). The program includes six courses (all done electronically), six assignments, six final exams, and a final written essay. In addition, all participants are required to attend four specific meetings during the year. All past club presidents as well as those currently serving as club presidents are eligible for nomination to the 2008-2009 DLA. You’ll need all of them in order to insure the candidate you are nominating has a full understanding of all the Academy requirements.
The deadline for submitting nominations to the DLA Dean, PDG Will Snyder, is July 31, 2008. The following are eligible to submit DLA nominations: Club Presidents & Presidents-Elect, Past District Governors & Assistant Governors, DG, DGE, DGN, DGND, Leadership Academy Instructors,& Leadership Academy Graduates. The Academy class of 2008-2009 will be limited to a maximum of 20 students.
Information for the Academy Class of 2009 will be posted on the Leadership Academy Website in June. Nomination forms may be downloaded at that time. The deadline for nominations is 31 July 2008. If further information is needed, please contact PDG Will Snyder, Dean of the Leadership Academy.
