Public Toilet project in Dhulikhel
In January of 2005, we returned to Nepal where Tom (English) had spent three years as a Peace Corps volunteer 40 years earlier. While the changes were immense, more cars, more people in Kathmandu, more tension because of the Maoists, the poverty and needs were even greater.
We were introduced to the Rotary Club in Dhulikhel, a town on the road to Tibet about 20 miles from Kathmandu. Under their leadership Dhulikhel has built a hospital, with the help of the Swiss government, old people have a senior center with a hot meal several times a week because of a partnership with Rotary Clubs in Japan.
However, public sanitation is still a big problem as there are no toilet facilities and people use fields, vacant lots and even the street. Because of a District 5110 World Community Service Grant and contributions from the clubs of Eugene Metro, Medford Rogue, Roseburg Morning, Scott Valley, and Eugene Southtowne the construction of public toilets is beginning.
This is just another example of what Rotary Foundation dollars can accomplish. ~ Tom & Nancy English.
