Welcome to District 5110

District 5110 encompasses the southern two-thirds of the state of Oregon and the very northern part of the state of California. Geographically the district is a diverse landscape, from the rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean to the snow-covered 10,000 foot mountain peaks to dramatic deserts.

The 4,282 Rotarians in our district are proud of our many service projects both in our communities and around the world. We welcome you to not only visit one of our 70 clubs, but also to have the opportunity to introduce you to the many educational, cultural and recreational opportunities available here. Let District 5110 Rotarians show you what good hosts we are!

Fellow, Rotarians,

Our Rotary Foundation began humbly in 1917 when Arch C. Klumph, Rotary’s sixth president, proposed it at the Rotary International Convention that year. This created the endowment fund for Rotary ‘for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service’. It was not until July, 1918, that the endowment received its first contribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, which represented the net proceeds from the 1918 International Convention.

As District 5110 Rotarians we can be very proud of our contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Last year we contributed over $628,000 to the Annual Programs Fund, one half of which will come back to us in District Designated Funds (DDF) during DGN Claire Little’s year as District Governor, 2010-2011. Those funds will provide district matching funds for your World Community Service Projects and funds for District Simplified Grants (see those articles in this month’s newsletter), educational programs such as Rotary Peace and Ambassadorial Scholarships, and much more.

Each year our giving supports our purpose and strategic vision: ‘The vision of Rotary International is to be universally recognized for our commitment to Service Above Self to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace.’

This year our giving will provide needed funding for those programs we initiate in 2011-2012. Whether you give once a year, quarterly, monthly or weekly you are making a difference. A monthly contribution of $8.34 through TRF Direct from your checking account would make you a sustaining member; a contribution of $25 a month would be a triple sustainer, $42.67 a month would reach the Arch Klumph level, and $83.34 a month would achieve the Paul Harris Society level. You know that your contribution will make a very real difference in the lives of others in need of clean water, basic sanitation, functional literacy, treatment and prevention of disease, and much more.

My thanks to all of you who are actively supporting our Rotary Foundation through your ongoing giving. I invite / ask, those who are not currently giving in support of The Rotary Foundation by giving annually or more frequently to seriously consider making it one of your charities of choice. It will provide a significant return on your investment and have a significant impact on humanity.

Ask your club Rotary Foundation Chair how you can make a real difference in the lives of others this year and in the future. If you want to create a Rotary legacy, contact one of our District permanent fund advisors.

Together, as Rotarians, as we apply our head and our hands in active service and as we give from our hearts to our Rotary Foundation, we can ‘Make Dreams Real’ for the world’s children and give them hope for the Future.
