World Community Service

What is WCS?

Every time a Rotary club in one country helps a Rotary club in another to complete a local humanitarian project it is an example of World Community Service. Since 1962, Rotary clubs have been working together across international borders under the auspices of this popular program. Often a WCS project is initiated by a club with resources to donate.

Regardless of how a WCS project begins, the participants and the community in which the project is undertaken share equally in its benefits. For the local club, WCS provides a means by which it can give more to its community than its resources would normally allow. For clubs assisting in the project, it's an opportunity to extend their parameters of service far beyond their own communities to improve conditions in other parts of the world.

The World Community Service Committee

  • Promotes international service activities by encouraging, educating and assisting clubs in identifying international community service projects; developing contacts with Rotary clubs in other countries, and assisting clubs in obtaining matching grants for WCS projects.
  • Applies District Designated Funds (DDF) . . . SHARE funds obtained from contributions to the Rotary Foundation . . . allocated for humanitarian purposes as a match to club contributions for international projects.
  • Works with the club project sponsors to review grant applications to verify that they are complete and comply with The Rotary Foundation requirements before submission to TRF

The executive committee is responsible for making interim decisions as necessary between full committee meetings. Committee meetings, which are listed in the District Directory, on the District web site, and in the District Calendar, are held quarterly in Roseburg starting at 9:00 am. A buffet lunch is provided. Any Rotarian is welcome to attend a WCS Committee meeting. Any Rotary club representative wishing to propose a project for consideration to the committee should first contact a member of the Executive Committee or check the district web site (under WCS) for the one-page project summary form and for information on preparing proposals.

Read a Rotarian magazine article about ProjectLINK.

ProjectLINK is a searchable database that lists Rotary club and district community service projects in need of funding, volunteers, donated goods, and/or partners for a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant, and completed projects that can be used as examples of best practices. For additional project details, contact programs@rotary.org or the local Rotarian or club listed.
